Celebración del 12 de diciembre

Every year on december 12th in the hispanic catholic culture. Every december 12th we celebrate the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. There is a famous legend and reason on why we make big celebrations in her honor. The legend says that Juan Diego encountered the virgin twice in Mexico City on december 9th and 12th. This encounter is known to be a miracle. The celebration is held in her honor with live music, food,flowers, and prayer. To start off the celebration a rosary is prayed. After the rosary, usually food is given, most traditionally tamales with sweet punch are given. After the main course hot chocolate with concha bread. Usually while eating mariachi music or banda music is playing happy birthday to the virgin. After the happy birthday song they continue to play praise songs to her. Also, a group of dancers called “matachines” who are dressed in ritual attire. These dancers dance in honor to the Virgin Mary. This celebration is done in honor to celebrate and worship the miracle and the day of the Virgin Mary.

Cada año el 12 de diciembre en la cultura hispana católica, se celebra a la virgen de Guadalupe la mamá de Jesus. Hay una famosa leyenda y la razón que celebramos en su honor. La leyenda dice que Juan Diego se encontró a la virgen de guadalupe dos veces en la ciudad de méxico el nueve y doce de diciembre. Esos encuentros son conocidos como milagros. Para celebrar en su honor ponen música en vivo, comida, rosas, y también rezamos. Según la tradición primero se reza un rosario a la virgen después se da la comida, que tradicionalmente son los tamales con ponche. Después de la cena como postre se dan conchas con café o chocolate. Usualmente mientras se está comiendo la música en vivo ya sea el mariachi o la banda le cantan las mañanitas y canciones de alabanzas. También, un grupo de bailarines conocidos como matachines que están vestidos con ropa ritual le bailan en su honor. Esta celebración se le hace a la virgen maria para apreciar y honrar sus milagros de ella.
