What Voting in Spain looks like

It may not be time to vote for a new prime minister for Spain, but the time sure is coming up. Not many people know that Spain has a constitutional parliamentary monarchy, and just like Britain, they also have a Prime Minister to help aid in decision-making. In 2022, it will be time to vote for a new Prime Minister but here is all about the current one and more on the government of Spain.

Pedro Sánchez is the current Prime Minister of Spain and has been since 2018. He has also been Secretary-General of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party since June 2017, having previously held that office from 2014 to 2016. He has had quite some time to gain the trust of the people of Spain. He seems to lean more left but is still relatively close to the center, but more specifically, he belongs to the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party. Although Spain has multiple political parties, The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party seems to be the most popular. So much so that when Sánchez ran, the PSOE party filled up most of the seats in parliament. Since Spain still has a monarchy, we have to talk about the king. King Felipe VI is the current king! Spain's previous king, Juan Carlos I, abdicated the throne on June 2, 2014, he handed his son Felipe two titles: head of state and head of the Spanish Royal Household, the dynasty of the House of Bourbon. Since he is a royal, people can’t really vote on who is next in line but a king can choose to step down just like Juan Carlos I did.

Speaking of, how exactly do people vote in Spain? Local elections take place throughout Spain every four years to elect local mayors and councilors. The Prime Minister is chosen by a vote of the members of the government. The Prime Minister can keep their job as long as they are a member of parliament and have support from the government. The people of Spain don’t have a say here, but they do in local and that matters. Any election is important, it may not seem like it but people that can vote, should vote. Voting is just a little more complicated than American elections at first. Each of Spain's political parties will choose candidates; when voting in Spain the party is chosen, not the individual. After the election date is announced, candidates will campaign until just before the election. Then, the voter would choose the list of candidates, place it into one of the envelopes provided and seal the envelope. In Spain, they have indirect elections meaning that the people can choose the party that in return will elect people to represent them. Senators are elected directly from the provinces and indirectly from the autonomous communities; currently, there are 264 senators, 208 directly elected and 56 indirectly elected.

This all seems like so much work to do for something that seems so simple, but it works! Voting in elections matters no matter if it is local or if it is for something else.
