Carnations and what the colors mean

Spring is finally here! That means that all the beautiful flowers of Spain have started to bloom. There are so many options, but carnations are always a pleasant sight to see when visiting Spain. With their ruffled petals and bold hues, carnations sure do add a lot of character to any garden.

Red carnations are the national flower of Spain, and they have a deeper meaning than most people know. Oddly enough, sometimes it is referred to by its scientific name, dianthus caryophyllus. Why? Well, dianthus roughly translates to “flower of love” or “flower of the gods,” and it’s been that way for a long time. There are stories about the flower, some that are centuries old. It’s been used for the same purpose for a long time, art and decor. It is believed by Christians that the first carnation bloomed on earth when Mary cried for Jesus as he carried his cross. It is often still used as a symbol of Christ and the crown of thorns. They don’t only have a Christian meaning but a meaning for love like mentioned before. Giving someone a whole bouquet of light red carnations symbolizes how much you love and appreciate them! Deeper shades of red are often seen as a more intense feeling, so this color variation means deep love. It doesn’t have to be for a significant other, you could give them to your friends and family too, just to show them that you care!

These red, delicate flowers are making their way into everyone’s wardrobe, especially because the ruffles of the petals look like flamenco dancer dresses. In movies and tv shows, they sometimes portray Spaniards with red carnations in their hair for festivities, and this is true! It may not be on an everyday basis, but some people do sport a single, or a few, red carnations in their hair.

There are different meanings that correspond to different color variations of carnations. Lighter shades of pink express gratitude and are just like red carnations but on a friendlier level. A darker pink can symbolize a crush so much so that these are often given on first dates. White carnations represent purity and good fortune, so this can be given to friends or someone you hope succeeds. Purple carnations represent capriciousness. In other words, they’re given to someone who is unpredictable and impulsive. Then, there is that one color that no one should hope to see, yellow. Yellow carnations represent rejection or disappointment.

There is so much character and meaning behind this beautiful flower. It is no wonder why Spain chose red carnations to be the national flower. With all the color variations in mind, make sure to give the right color so people don’t get the wrong idea!
