Flowers of India

Updated: Apr 20, 2021

Flowers in India have many purposes. Here are a few flowers that are important to us:

1. Lotus (Telugu: Kamalam ~ కమలం)

Lotus flowers are not only the national flower of India, but they also represent an important symbol in Hindu mythology. They are also used in parallel with the Hindu goddess Lakshmi.

2. Jasmines (Telugu: Malle Puvvu ~ మల్లె పువ్వు)

These flowers smell insanely good. The white color of Jasmines is a symbol of purity and they represent purity and forgiveness for the worshipper as well. They are also considered a substitute for perfume sometimes, and they adorn women's hair.

3. Marigolds (Telugu: Banti Puvvu ~ బంతి పువ్వు)

These flowers are most commonly used for Poojas (worship) or to decorate the facade of homes and other important places.

4. Hibiscus (Telugu: Mandara Puvvu ~ మందార పువ్వు)

These flowers are super pretty. The red ones are used in India to worship the Goddess Kali.

5. Roses (Telugu: Gulabi Puvvu ~ గులాబీ పువ్వు)

These are used as decoration for basically everything after Marigolds. They also signify a happy married life for couples.

Fun Fact:

Jasmines have a super inappropriate connotation in certain situations (cough cough), but I won't tell you what it is. 😉

These are called Poolajadas in Telugu, and it's when you braid flowers into your hair. It looks really pretty, and it's one of my favorite traditions.

Kind regards,
